Playoff Details

Rules that apply to regular season matches all apply to playoff matches as well. The following  details describe how the playoffs will work for all age groups:

• Playoff length - your playoff may last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours based on how your team performs (one MSS team will stay for 4 hours). Teams should plan to be in the gym from their first scheduled match through the finals. 
  • All playoffs are single elimination.
  • Teams that lose a quarterfinal match (not all divisions have one) are only in the gym for an hour.
  • Once in the semifinals, a team will play 2 matches - a semifinal match, and then either the championship match or 3rd place match.
• Best 2 of 3 format - all matches are scheduled for a 60 minute time slot and will follow a best 2 of 3 format. The first 2 games are to 21 (win-by-two). If needed, the third game is played to 15 points (win-by-two).
• Matches start ASAP - matches will start on-time, so teams should arrive 10 to 15 minutes before their match start. As the playoff bracket continues, the next playoff round starts as soon as the two teams area available and ready.
• Shared warm-up period - each match will have a 10 minute warm-up period, with both teams warming up on either side of the court and then serving at the same time. If both teams have already played a match, this warm-up period may be shortened to start the match earlier.
• Playoff results - the Lead Ref at each site will direct a team to the appropriate gym for their next match.
• Playoff awards - an MYV board member or Lead Ref will be present at each gym site to hand out awards after the finals and 3rd place matches conclude, along with taking team pictures. See the section below on the places that will receive medals in each division.

Playoff Awards

For the 2025 Spring season, medals will be handed out to the following finishers in each pool:

• 4th grade = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
• 5th grade Gold = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
• 5th grade Silver = 1st
• 6th grade Gold = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
• 6th grade Silver = 1st
• 7th grade Gold = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
• 7th grade Silver = 1st
• 8th grade Gold = 1st and 2nd
• 8th grade Silver = 1st
• MSS = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
• HSH Gold = 1st and 2nd
• HSH Silver = 1st
• HSS Gold = 1st and 2nd
• HSS Silver = 1st
• HST = 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

For playoff seeding, we use the following rules to seed teams and to resolve ties:

1. Match win percentage
2. Set win percentage (where a "match" consists of "sets")
3. Head-to-head
4. Coin flip if needed

Please note that since Demosphere by default does not sort on win percentage, and thus the standings shown in Demosphere are not always what we use for seeding.
